Community football, rebuilt

Hessle Rangers

A 50-year grassroots football club, moved off WordPress and onto a fast, news-led site the committee can run themselves.

Overview

Hessle Rangers is a community football club in Hessle, East Yorkshire, founded in 1976 and now running more than 40 teams from age three to veterans. For its 50th year the club wanted to leave a slow, dated WordPress site behind and launch something that looked the part and kept itself up to date.

We rebuilt the whole thing on the Headless Digital CMS with a bespoke Nuxt front end, migrated the old content, and handed the club a site their volunteers can update without touching code.

The brief

The old site forwarded a domain to a free WordPress page. It was hard to edit, slow, and did not reflect a club of this size. The club needed a proper home for team information, news and match reports, the Bilsdon Park clubhouse project, and a way for parents to get in touch, all without adding work for the people who run the club in their spare time.

They also had 50 years of history worth telling, and a strong identity in the Argentina 1978 sky blue and white that the old site did nothing with.

The approach

We led the design with news and story rather than a static brochure. The homepage and news section put match reports and club updates first, so the site always looks current. Team pages are grouped by age and pathway, from first touch at three through to the senior and ladies sides.

The club's history became a scrolling timeline with a football that rolls down the page as you read, built as a custom content type so the committee can add milestones themselves. We migrated the old WordPress posts, set up permanent redirects from every old URL, and tuned the whole site for speed.

What we built

The pieces that make the site work for a busy committee.

News-led homepage

Match reports and club updates lead the page, so the site stays current without a redesign. Posts are written in a simple editor.

Custom history timeline

A scrolling 50-year timeline with a rolling football, built as a content type the club can add milestones to themselves.

Team pathway pages

Every side from 1st Touch to Veterans, grouped by age, with training details, coaches and a clear route in for new players.

Enquiry and join forms

Parents can register interest or ask a question, with submissions landing in the CMS and emailed straight to the club.

Clean WordPress migration

Old posts brought across and every legacy URL 301-redirected, so nothing that was shared or indexed breaks.

Fast, and compliant

A lightweight Nuxt front end, video kept small for mobile data, and a cookie consent banner gating third-party embeds.

The club, by numbers

Real scale behind a volunteer-run club.

What this shows

How the same platform fits very different clients.

Built for volunteers

The people running the club update news, teams and history themselves. No developer needed for day-to-day changes.

Migration done properly

Moving off WordPress without losing search rankings or breaking old links is a big part of the job, not an afterthought.

Fast by default

A bespoke front end on a headless CMS means the site is quick on a phone at a cold Sunday-morning pitch.
