Former Magento Head of Dev. Here's Why I Stopped Recommending It.

Certified Magento Developer. Former Head of Development. Former Technical Director. After 15+ years, I built something better.

I've spent more time inside Magento than most developers have spent writing code. Custom modules, complex integrations, multi-store setups, performance rescues, version upgrades that took months. I was Head of Development at agencies running enterprise Magento accounts. I've been the person businesses call when their Magento site is on fire.

I know Magento inside out. And I know exactly why it's the wrong choice for most businesses that use it.

Magento was built for enterprise. If you're processing tens of thousands of orders per day across multiple warehouses with complex pricing rules and ERP integrations — Magento makes sense. For everyone else, it's like using a forklift to carry a shopping bag.

The Magento Reality for Most Businesses

Here's what I saw again and again as a Magento consultant:

  • £100-500+/month just for hosting. Magento needs dedicated servers with serious resources. Shared hosting can't run it. Every hosting conversation starts at three figures.
  • Slow everything. The admin panel takes 10 seconds to load a product page. Cache clearing is a daily ritual. Reindexing takes minutes. Your staff spend more time waiting than working.
  • Developer dependency. Changing a button colour can require a developer. Adding a payment method means buying an extension and hiring someone to install it. The learning curve for Magento is measured in years, not weeks.
  • Upgrade nightmares. Magento 1 to 2 was effectively a rebuild. Every major update risks breaking extensions, themes, and custom modules. Businesses stay on outdated, insecure versions because upgrading is a project in itself.
  • Adobe's pricing. Adobe Commerce (formerly Magento Commerce) now costs £20,000+/year in licensing alone. The open-source version is free, but the ecosystem costs more than make up for it.
  • Extension sprawl. Payment gateways, shipping calculators, search, reviews, product recommendations — every feature is an extension with its own licence fee, compatibility requirements, and update cycle.

HD Commerce: Built for Real Businesses

Products & Variants

Product catalogue with variants, pricing, images, and descriptions. No extensions needed. Manage everything from one clean admin panel.

Stripe Payments

Checkout, deposits, subscriptions — all via Stripe. No payment gateway extensions. No PCI compliance headaches. Just connect your Stripe account.

Built-in Bookings

Online appointment booking with calendar management, intake forms, and automated reminders. Try doing that on Magento without three extensions.

Sub-Second Load Times

Static HTML on a CDN. Not PHP rendering from a dedicated server. Your customers get instant page loads on any device.

£20/month. Not £200.

Website, hosting, CMS, commerce, email, SSL, support — all included. Cancel Magento's hosting bill. Cancel the extension licences.

Call the Developer

Not an agency account manager. Not a support ticket queue. The developer who built the platform picks up the phone.

Bows Hair — 95+ Lighthouse, £20/month

Bows Hair — 95+ Lighthouse, £20/month

A hair salon paying more than they needed to for a slow, template website. Migrated to HD CMS in a day. Performance went from PageSpeed 20 to 95+. Online bookings increased 80%. Monthly cost dropped.

Magento would've been absurd overkill for this business. HD CMS was exactly right.
