A Developer's Honest Take","A senior developer's honest, first-person take on whether Claude is actually useful for a small business, and where it isn't.","Is Claude AI Good for Small Business?
11
"df011320-2aa5-43d0-a151-d9783dc9945b

I get asked some version of this question most weeks now, usually by a client who's heard the word "Claude" from a competitor or a podcast and wants to know if they're missing out. Short answer: yes, it's genuinely useful, and no, it won't run your business for you. Here's the honest version, from someone who builds client websites with Claude Code every single day rather than someone selling you an AI package.

What Claude actually is

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, in the same category as ChatGPT. You can talk to it through a website or app, or (this is the part that matters to me professionally) developers can build it directly into tools and workflows through its API. For a small business owner, the relevant version is the chat interface: you type a question or paste in some text, and it writes, summarises, explains, or reasons through a problem with you.

It is not a business consultant, not a member of staff, and not something you install once and forget about. It's closer to a very well-read, very fast assistant who has no memory of yesterday's conversation unless you give it the context again.

Where it's genuinely useful for a small business

Strip away the hype and the actual use cases for a five-to-fifty person business are fairly narrow but real:

First drafts. Customer emails, a job advert, a page of website copy, a social post. It won't sound like you until you edit it, but it turns a blank page into an editing job, which is a much easier task.

Summarising and explaining. Paste in a long supplier contract or a dense government guidance page and ask what it actually means for you. It's quick and it's honest about uncertainty if you ask it to be.

Structuring messy information. Turning a rambling voice note or a pile of notes into a proper document, a checklist, or an agenda.

Light coding and automation. Small scripts, spreadsheet formulas, tidying up data. Not a website build on its own, but a genuine time-saver for the fiddly stuff.

Notice what's missing from that list: strategy, judgement calls about your customers, and anything where getting it slightly wrong costs you real money or trust. That's still your job.

Where it falls short

Three honest limitations I run into constantly. First, it doesn't know your business. It knows what you tell it in that conversation, so the output is only as good as the context and instructions you give it, and most people give it neither. Second, it will confidently write something plausible-sounding and wrong, particularly on anything specific, like exact prices, legal thresholds, or recent news. Always check facts before they go out under your name. Third, it takes a bit of practice to prompt well. The first few things you try will probably be underwhelming, not because the tool is bad, but because getting good output is itself a small skill.

Claude vs ChatGPT, the honest version

People ask me to pick a winner and there isn't a clean one. In my day-to-day work I lean toward Claude for longer writing tasks and anything code-related, because I find the output needs less editing and it's better at holding a long, detailed brief without losing the thread. Plenty of developers I rate would tell you the opposite for their own workflow. For a small business owner doing occasional drafting and summarising rather than sustained daily use, the honest answer is that both are good enough, and the tool matters less than whether you actually build the habit of using one properly.

How I actually use it building client sites

I write this from the position of someone who uses Claude Code most days to build and maintain real client websites, not from reading about it. It speeds up the mechanical parts of development so I can spend more time on the decisions that actually need a person: what the site should say, how it should work for a particular business, and what happens when something breaks. That combination, senior judgement plus AI-assisted execution, is genuinely faster than either half on its own, and it's why I lead with "bespoke and AI-assisted" rather than either "fully custom" or "AI-generated" on their own. Neither of those older labels describes how the work actually gets done any more.

How to start without wasting a weekend

Pick one recurring task you already do badly or reluctantly, something like weekly customer update emails or turning meeting notes into an action list, and try it there first. Give it real context (your actual tone, an example of past work, the specific details) rather than a one-line request. Expect to edit the output, every time, at least at first. If that one task genuinely saves you time after a couple of weeks, look for the next one. If you try to overhaul everything in one go, you'll get a mess and give up.

If you want a steer on where AI genuinely helps a business like yours (and where it's a waste of a subscription), my notes on where AI actually helps goes deeper, and my AI for business page covers the local, hands-on side of what I do beyond the writing. If you'd rather just talk it through, my services page has the ways to get in touch.

If you are trying to work out where AI actually fits in your business, get in touch and I will give you a straight answer before you spend anything.
","lg","wysiwyg","
Adam Jackson",[21],"ai",true,"2026-09-25T08:00:00+00:00","2026-08-03T07:10:53+00:00","2026-10-01T19:41:42.773395+00:00",[27,40,53,65,76,88,91,104
"fd7b0e56-d3d2-4824-a2ce-2948a6ecfa7d","notes/why-16000-supabase-databases-were-left-exposed","16,326 Supabase Databases Were Left Exposed.
