The business owner has decided they should probably be using AI for something, someone has told them Claude is better, someone else swears by ChatGPT, and they want me to settle it.

I use both. I build with Claude Code every working day, and I keep a ChatGPT subscription running alongside it. So here's the honest version rather than the affiliate-link version.

The short answer

For most small businesses, the difference between the two matters far less than whether anyone actually uses the thing. I have watched companies agonise for six weeks over which one to buy, then buy neither. That is the real failure mode, and it costs more than picking the "wrong" one.

If you want a decision in one line: pick ChatGPT if the main job is general office work spread across a few staff, and pick Claude if the main job is writing, reading long documents, or anything touching code. Then move on and spend your energy on training people to use it.

What they cost

At the individual tier they are the same money. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20 a month, which lands somewhere around £16 to £17 depending on the exchange rate that week. Claude does a slightly cheaper annual rate at $17 a month billed yearly. ChatGPT Plus stays at $20 either way.

For teams, ChatGPT Business is $25 per user per month, or $20 if you pay annually, with a two-user minimum. Claude Team starts at $25 a seat monthly and $20 annually, and lets you mix standard seats with heavier ones. Both have a much more expensive top tier at $100 and $200 a month for people hammering it all day.

So cost is a wash. Anyone telling you one is dramatically cheaper is comparing different tiers. What actually varies is how much you get done before you hit a usage limit, and that depends far more on how you work than on the sticker price.

Where ChatGPT is genuinely better

Breadth. It does images, voice, and a wider spread of built-in tools, and it plugs into more third-party software out of the box. If you want one subscription that covers a marketing person making social images, an office manager transcribing meetings, and a director asking general questions, ChatGPT covers more of that in one place.

Familiarity is a real advantage too, and I don't think people weigh it enough. Your staff have probably already used ChatGPT at home. Rolling out a tool that half the team has seen before removes a genuine barrier. I have seen a technically better tool fail a rollout purely because nobody recognised it.

It also has the bigger ecosystem of tutorials, courses and templates. If you are going to learn this from YouTube, there is more material aimed at you.

Where Claude is genuinely better

Long documents and careful reading. If your work involves contracts, tenders, policies, reports, or anything where somebody has to read forty pages and pull out what matters, Claude has been noticeably more reliable for me. It holds the thread better across a long document and it is more willing to say when something isn't in the text.

Writing tone. Claude drafts prose that needs less rewriting to sound like a person. That is subjective and you should test it on your own material rather than take my word for it, but it is the single most common reason my clients end up preferring it.

Code and technical work. This isn't close, in my experience. Most of my build work runs through Claude Code. If your business has anything technical happening, or you have a developer, that is worth weighing heavily.

The question that actually decides it

Forget the model comparison for a minute and answer this: what is the first job you will give it on Monday morning?

Not "improve productivity". An actual task. Drafting quotes. Summarising the week's customer emails. Writing product descriptions. Getting through a tender document. Cleaning up a spreadsheet.

Take that one task, run it through both on their free tiers for an afternoon, and see which output you'd rather edit. That is a better test than any benchmark chart, because it is your work, your tone, and your standard of good. It takes about two hours and settles the argument permanently.

I have had clients do this and go the opposite way to what I expected. That's fine. It's their work, not mine. If you're leaning towards Claude specifically, I went into more detail on that in is Claude AI good for small business.

Don't buy it for everyone on day one

The mistake I see most often is buying twelve seats because it felt decisive, then finding out three months later that four people use it and eight logged in once. Buy two or three seats, give them to the people who are already curious, let them find the wins, and expand from there. You will learn more from those three people than from any procurement exercise.

Whichever you land on, write down the rules before you roll it out. What can go in it, what can't, and who checks the output. Customer data, staff records and anything commercially sensitive need an explicit answer, and both providers publish business-tier terms on training data that are different from the consumer terms. Read them, or get someone to read them for you.

What I actually run

Claude for building and for anything involving long text or careful reasoning. ChatGPT for image work and for the odd job where its wider tool access is the easier route. Two subscriptions, about £34 a month between them, and I'd struggle to give either up. For a one-person business that is a rounding error against what it saves me.

Most of my clients don't need both. They need one, set up properly, with two or three tasks it does reliably every week. That's where the money is, and it has almost nothing to do with which logo is on it.

If you want a hand

I set these up for real businesses in Hull and East Yorkshire, which mostly means working out which jobs are worth handing over and which are not. If you want to talk it through, I do a free 30-minute call with no pitch attached.
","lg","wysiwyg
"fa000002-0000-4000-8000-000000000002
[22,25,28,31,34
For most small businesses the difference matters far less than whether anyone actually uses it.
